How to Create a Rescue USB
Unlike a factory reset, a USB rescue drive re-writes the firmware image stored on the Core and rewrites parts of the file system. All previous designs stay in the Core's design history, and the firmware is erased and re-written.
Requirements
- Computer running Windows
- 4GB (or larger) USB drive newly formatted as FAT32. (Avoid USB drives 32 GB and larger.)
- Core Rescue Image provided by QSC
- USB image writing software, such as Win32 Disk Imager
Writing the image file to a USB drive
To create a rescue USB, use USB image writing software. QSC suggests a tool called Win32 Disk Imager. This software can be found and downloaded online using a search engine.
- The image file you download will be a compressed image file. Unzip (decompress) the rescue image file that was downloaded from the QSC service website or provided to you by QSC. The file will end in “.img.gz”. Decompress the file using a program comparable to WinRar or 7-Zip. After decompressing the .gz file, you should have a “efi-rescue.img” file.
- After downloading Win32DiskImager, run the Win32DiskImager.exe and select the USB-mounted Device from the drop-down menu.
- Select the Image file that you extracted. This file will end with “.img”.
- Press Write and wait for the USB image to be created.
Verifying the USB rescue image
Open up the USB drive and view the contents of the folder. These folders and files should be in the root directory of the USB drive:
- EFI (folder) containing Boot > bootx64.efi
- qsc_rescue.img
Rescue Instructions
-
Power off the Core by unplugging it.
-
Insert the Rescue USB into any of the USB-A ports on the back of the Core.
-
Plug the Core into AC power.
-
The motherboard will find the connected USB drive and load the image into memory. Once the OS image has been successfully transferred to the motherboard’s on-board memory, the following output should be displayed on the external monitor.
Note: If you do not have access to an external monitor to alert you when the image file has successfully been written, wait at least 5 minutes, and then proceed.
-
Remove the USB rescue disk from the Core and power down the Core by unplugging it.
-
Re-apply AC power to the Core and wait for it to fully boot.
Reinstalling Licenses
If the Rescue Image process is successful, the Core's SSD will be wiped clean of all files and licenses. Contact QSC Support to obtain the product key license. If you did not back up the feature licenses before performing the rescue image process, QSC Support can provide those licenses along with the product key license.
Note: The Core will not behave correctly until the product key license is re-installed onto the Core. The ID button on the front panel will not work, and the Core will display as "Core-X" in Configurator.
